Pearl care

Pearls are softer than gemstones, and gold plating wears with time. Four habits keep both bright for years.

  1. 1

    Last on, first off

Put your earrings on after make-up, perfume and hairspray, and take them off before you wash your face, shower or go to bed.

  2. 2

    Wipe after wearing

A soft, dry cloth after each wear takes off skin oils and make-up. Never use jewellery cleaner, an ultrasonic cleaner or steam.

  3. 3

    Keep the gold dry

Take your earrings off for the gym, the beach and the pool, and wipe off any sweat before you put them away. Sweat, salt water and chlorine wear the plating faster.

  4. 4

    Store them in their box

Put each pair back in its clear gift box. It helps protect against tarnish and keeps the pearls away from harder jewellery that can scratch them.

Questions

What people ask about wearing pearls and gold.

Can I wear them in the shower or the pool?

No. Water, chlorine and soap dull a pearl’s surface and wear the plating, so take them off first.

Can I clean them with a jewellery cleaner?

No. Cleaners, ultrasonic baths and steam can damage the pearl’s surface. A soft, dry cloth is enough.

Can I sleep in them?

Better not. The pearls can rub against the pillow and the posts can bend.

Will the gold wear off?

Gold plating is a thin layer, so it can wear over time, faster with sweat, perfume and water. Follow the habits above and it stays bright for longer.

What are they made of?

Every pair is 925 sterling silver plated in 14k gold, set with freshwater cultured pearls. If you know you react to silver or gold, email us before you order.
